Magazine Lane in Marchwood is a very, very good venue for all types of fish in all sorts of weather. It has many snags and favours a rig that will take a lead lift. We are told that most of these snags are abandoned metal cables that were used in industry and when they were no longer required, were cut free and left in the water causing a major hazard for anglers.
Magazine Lane is constantly under the watchful eye of the residents and the local Sailing Club as there have been many run ins with both these parties and the anglers over the years. Most of the trouble comes from (and I hate to say this) the bad attitude of some of the sea anglers! Luckily these people are a minority but they are capable of spoiling it for the rest of us. Magazine Lane gets an overwhelming amount of litter
as there are no bins there, but this is no excuse! If you take the gear there, you should then take it back home when you leave! The other problem is the unruly behaviour and bad language towards members of the Sailing club. Remember when you cross over
their land you are on their land!
So let's talk fishing! Magazine Lane is one of the deepest venues around because of its shipping capabilities. It is dredged regularly so that the tankers can easily make their way up to their docking points. According to my friend Oceanographer Lisette Rimmer at ABP, the deep channel at Magazine
Lane is maintained at 55 foot at low tide so depending on what day of the year it is you can add up to 5 metres per tide! This depth is fantastic for the anglers' needs as it ensures deep water to fish at all times of the day which is something that you would rarely see this far up an estuary. Species from Maggy Lane are plentiful and one young angler who has fished Magazine Lane for over a decade has recorded captures of Sole, Plaice, Dabs, Dogfish, Bass, Mackerel, Dragonets, Wrasse, Pollock, Whiting, Pout, Flounders, Smoothounds, Rays, Scad, Tub Gurnard, Poor Cod, Eels and Mullet!! Now there's a mixed grill!
From the rocks at Maggy you can use a single hook rig and 1 worm and try for some small live baits and then fish them on a 2/0 hook for the
Bass. This method is a very exiting way of fishing as the bites are often very positive. I have found that a size 1/0 Kamasan hook clipped down with 2 of Ammo’s mini squid as bait is lethal at this venue. I use a bit of bait elastic on the squid but not to much as I want it to flow in the water and not just lay there in a lump. You will be quite surprised at how well this rig works for the Bass. I will always use a lead lift at Maggy as I have found this stops the snags eating your gear as it is a very tackle hungry beach indeed.
